Negative reviews are attributed to lousy experiences with particular booksellers. Better to review the booksellers themselves, rather than the website they use to sell their wares. That's like reviewing eBay or Amazon negatively as a whole because of a bad private seller.
The vast majority of my experiences on Abebooks have been professional & speedy, and the few times things have gone wrong Abebooks have enforced refunds, so long as you can provide tracking information for the return. Descriptions tend to be less accurate when dealing with bulk warehouse-sellers rather than bricks & mortar second-hand Bookshops. Minus 1 star for representing a regrettable global monopoly -- try 'Biblio' if you can, first.
Do not use Abe if you can avoid doing so, they care nothing about customer experience. Recently I ordered an expensive book from one of the booksellers they list, Burwood Books in Suffolk UK. Burwood books failed to despatch my order for one week though the Abe page stated that it had been sent teh day following my purchase. When I contacted Abe about this appalling lack of service they sent a standard reply.

Book didnt arrive, and it took 3 months of endless excuses..........my repsonse; Doesnt mean I am happy, its the most convoluted way of trying to buy a book I have ever come across, endlessly blaming covid and a denial of the problem but its me that had paid good money for no result
I have been waiting for a reply from the customer support for almost a month now. My book never arrived and I cannot contact anyone. Worst service ever.
Good safe website Emailed the seller and got a reply within an hour .Book came packaged well I recommend
Horrible services. Both the website and the sellers. Only trust sellers, like Blackwell and BookDepository and Speedyhen. The biggest mistake to register this website in 2021. Will never use it again.
Great website with a huge selection. Some of the books are a little on the expensive side but I have also got some great bargains over the years and am happy to support independent booksellers. Very trustworthy site and well worth a browse.
I foolishly ordered through Abebooks on Feb 7th, and am still waiting, with only automated replies to my enquiries. DON'T USE THEM - they don't seem to have any customer service, just auto reply saying don't reply!
Successfully purchased many books through this service.A couple of books didn't arrive, but refunds were provided after raising the issue through their online system.
Utterly disappointed by abebooks customer service. Wanted to support smaller business, ordered a number of books, one of those never arrived. Asked for the matter to be looked into - nothing. Sent friendly reminder - nothing. Then asked for a refund, and was sent from one person to the next. Kept tone friendly and polite throughout. Three months later still no book and no refund. What a shame but will stick with amazon... and wouldn't recommend abebooks to anyone - totally unprofessional.
Cheaper than Amazon, decent quality used books for a fraction of the price, many with free postage. Good delivery periods too. Just about to place another order! That's three this week...
Looking at other reviews, maybe I have been lucky. I have bought many books through AbeBooks and have been very pleased with the service. I have always known that the book would be used and have found the condition to be as described. On a couple of occasions a book has not arrived and my payment has been refunded without question.
Please beware, this website is misleading and you will be disappointed.The book I selected was 48p cheaper than anywhere else (£9.12 vs £9.60). What they do not tell you is that the book is USED. Only after receiving email confirmation of the order did it become apparent, whereby I immediately cancelled the order.I received confirmation that the order had NOT been sent and that I would NOT be charged. Both were untrue as I received the USED item and was charged. The state of the book was UNACCEPTABLE.Only buy from Abe Books if you don't mind being mislead, lied to, and ripped off.
Placed an order on 25/1/2021 and it specifies shipping in 7-15 days yet the estimated delivery date is 15/2/21 which is 3 weeks, I know there are some delivery issues but 3 weeks to deliver a book is terrible, they get your money but you have to wait so I’m considering asking for a chargeback from my card company as the book will arrive too late now!
